Community Worker Program

The 127 Society is committeed to providing tenants with more than simply a roof over their heads. We seek to build community among our tenants, and through that, opportunities for their personal growth, friendship, and comfort during difficult times. The Society’s Community Workers ensure that tenants are offered real opportunities to live in community.

Almost from the beginning the 127 Society fundraised to employ a Community Worker in each of our buildings. Some are trained as social workers, others as addictions counsellors or chefs. Their job is to draw tenants out of social isolation and into friendly, neighbourly interactions.

“The staff look out for us here, And that Randy really can cook.” Bill, tenant since 2000

The Society has a much closer relationship with its tenants than the standard landlord-tenant relationship. Community Workers are aware of each tenant’s challenges, and can intervene to forestall crises. They act as advocates for tenants with health and social service providers to secure necessary supports.

Community workers help tenants

  • plan and cook community dinners
  • gather for morning coffee and newspapers
  • stock and staff the on-site low-cost food stores
  • cook and serve at bingo nights
  • use the computer centres
  • hold memorial services for tenants who have passed away
  • distribute donated produce from nearby grocers
  • repair and make furniture in the wood workshop
  • arrange home support when released from hospital
  • apply for benefits
  • arrange for a bookkeeper to do their taxes

“When I was sick at Christmas last year, Randy, my Community Worker, visited me in hospital. When I was sent home, he arranged for a nurse to come and see that I was okay and make sure that I take my heart medication. I love living at the Wellspring because it makes me feel comfortable and safe.” Mona, tenant since 2004

Building Community, Re-building Lives

The 127 Society for Housing needs the financial support of many people to ensure that community workers are on staff to assist tenants, and that vulnerable elderly tenants are able to stay in their apartments as long as possible. Please help us re-build tenants’ lives by giving your support to these programs. Tax receipts are issued for all donations.
